Rekha Rao Hebbar studied painting under her eminent artist father K K Hebbar and holds a post graduate in History, Bombay University. Rekha has had many solo exhibitions from 1971 until to date, both in India and internationally. She has also been part of numerous group exhibitions, residencies, and camps across the world. She has held solo shows in major cities in India as well as Germany, Switzerland, UK, USA and Australia.
Her paintings are an inter-play of visual experiences gleaned from her surroundings. They are a conflation of association. The search is for a grammar of colours which will effectively illuminate her response towards events and happenings that serve as a trigger. She works on paper and canvas. Among many honours, in 1977 she was received an award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in Lucknow, UP. In 1978 she received an award from the Maharashtra State Art Exhibition in Mumbai. In 2003 she was presented the G. S. Shenoy Memorial Award. In 2006 she was awarded the Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava Award. She has served on the Governing board of Karnataka state Lalit Kala Akademi. She is Founding Trustee of K.K Hebbar Art Foundation, engaged in promoting art and artists for the last three decades.
Rekha’s works are in the collection of National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. Singapore National Museum, Fukuoka Gallery Japan and Venkatappa Gallery Bengaluru besides several private collectors. She divides her time between Bangalore and Mumbai.
